Certification and Survey Provider Enhanced Reports (CASPER) Daily Minimum Data Set (MDS) Census Reports for Nursing Homes

May 15, 2023

The 1704D Daily MDS Census Detail and 1704S Daily MDS Census Summary reports in the Payroll-Based Journal (PBJ) report category in the CASPER Reporting application are only considering those MDS records that were accepted in the Quality Improvement and Evaluation System (QIES) Assessment And Submission Processing (ASAP) system.  Specifically, any qualifying records that were submitted to and processed by the QIES ASAP system prior to April 13 at 8:00 p.m. ET are included. These reports display the daily resident census of active (non-discharged) residents in the facility for a timeframe specified by the user.

Presently, any MDS records accepted into the Internet Quality Improvement and Evaluation System (iQIES) on or after the MDS migration on April 17, 2023 are not being considered in these two reports.  CMS is in the process of updating these reports in CASPER to account for MDS records that are accepted into iQIES.  Facilities can continue to utilize the reports in CASPER while the updates are being completed, understanding that the census counts are only as current as of the last submission performed by the facility into the QIES ASAP system.  CMS will notify facilities once the CASPER reports have been updated.

In the interim, facilities should review the MDS 3.0 Nursing Home (NH) Final Validation Reports that are available in iQIES to confirm that MDS records submitted to iQIES have been accepted.  Providers can also refer to the MDS 3.0 Roster Report in the Provider report category in iQIES to identify a list and count of active residents in their facility as of the time that the report was requested.
